Our bodies are our homes, intimately familiar and occasional alien to  us. In addition to the medical marvels and messes we often find when we  look a little closer at our physical selves, we also carry with us  generations of folklore, belief, and wonder regarding our bones, skin,  hair, teeth, and more. This course provides a close look at the folklore  of magic and the body, beginning with a tour of the various body parts  and some of the traditional lore, superstitions, and magical practices  associated with us from head to shoulders, knees to toes. The course  then expands into a look at the blood, bile, and other various effluvium  our bodies make and how those have been used magically in the past (and  how they sometimes still are in the present). We will also cover the  astrological body, as mapped in the classic “Zodiac Man” illustrations,  and conclude with a discussion of our bodies once we leave them–corpse  lore.

About the Presenter:
Cory Thomas Hutcheson (Central Pennsylvania) is the cohost of the popular podcast New World Witchery.  He has a doctorate in American Studies with specializations in  folklore, religion, and ethnicity from Penn State. He is a contributor  to the Oxford Handbook of American Folklore and Folklife Studies and American Myths, Legends, & Tall Tales, and he has written for popular occult publications, including Witches & Pagans.
