Angelo Valla Tarot de Marseille (1790) (Limited to 50 copies, telescopic box)
The Angelo Valla Tarot de Marseille is a historically significant deck originating from late
eighteenth-century Trieste, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Rooted in the
Italian tarot tradition while retaining French titles, the deck shows clear affinities with the
Besançon pattern in several cards, including the Devil, the Moon, and the World. The
original deck is held by the British Museum, and this edition by Marco Benedetti
represents a careful, respectful restoration, removing surface dirt, edge markings, and
intrusive sanguine pencil lines while preserving the warm, autumnal palette that defines
the deck's historical character. The result is a beautifully clarified presentation of a rare
and important piece of tarot history, faithful to the artistry of its eighteenth-century
origins.
