The Annunciation Gabriel the archangel comes to Mary as the Messenger of God to announce that she is to be the Virgin prophesied in Isaiah 7:14. There are countless depictions of this beautiful scene that have been made throughout the centuries and they all have elements that are symbolic. Here, the scene is placed in New Mexico. The post that divides the angel from Mary represents their different worlds of heaven and earth. Mary holds the book with the prophecy in it. Gabriel offers her lilies, representing her purity. Mary is depicted with full recognition of the weight of Gabriel's message and what she will face because of it. The room behind her is God's bedchamber. The pot represents the pending pregnancy.

Isaiah 7:14: "And the Lord Himself shall give you a sign. Behold a Virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."
