Persephone Rising, Kore returns to Earth – Patroness of gardening, farms, prosperity, & flowers

Persephone/Kore (Περσεφόνη/ Κόρη) in her Spring aspects is associated with torches, fleece, cornucopia, fresh flowers, wheat, grass, & tilled fields. The daughter of Demeter and Zeus, and the wife of Hades, Persephone is not only queen of the underworld, but in the verdant half of the year, the patroness of flowers, gardening, crops & prosperity.

The abduction of Kore in the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, has been considered by many to be the founding myth of the Eleusinian Mysteries, with an annual Festival celebrating and petitioning both Kore & Demeter dating back to at least 6th century BCE. In Sicily she is celebrated in the Korēs Katagōgē, a ritual of thanks when the grains planted in the Spring have reached maturity and are able to be harvested. Though many associate Persephone as being the love-interest of Hades, and the Queen of Hell, her Chthonic patronage is at its height in Spring and Summer, at which we may celebrate Kore emerging from the underworld, bedecked in the fresh blooms and buds that herald this powerfully verdant time of year.

"Rich-crowned Demeter . . . straightway made fruit to spring up from the rich lands, so that the whole wide earth was laden with leaves and flowers. Then she went, and to the princes who deal justice, Triptolemos and Diokles, the horse-driver, and to doughty Eumolpos and Keleus, leader of the people, she showed the conduct of her rites and taught them all her Mysteries, to Triptolemos and Polyxeinos and Diokles also,--awful Mysteries which no one may in any way transgress or pry into or utter, for deep awe of the gods checks the voice. Happy is he among men upon earth who has seen these mysteries; but he who is uninitiate and who has no part in them, never has lot of like good things once he is dead, down in the darkness and gloom."  - Persephone's return after her time in the Underworld, from Homeric Hymn 2 to Demeter., (Greek epic C7th or 6th BCE), 1 ff (trans. Evelyn-White)
