“Memento Mori” is a Latin phrase meaning “remember that you will die.” It sounds sad, but it was intended to be a motivating phrase - you never know how long you have, so make the most of the present moment.
The idea behind “memento mori” has its roots in the philosophers of classical antiquity, and the symbolism of the gothic skulls later became popular in medieval Christian artwork.
