Do you ever stop and wonder just what was in  “Love Potion No. 9?” The history of folk magic and sorcery is strewn  with the litter of a million love spells, and in this two-hour course  we’ll look at a handful of them to see what they can tell us about the  nature of that magic and our own relationships. We’ll begin with a  general historical overview, then dive into six “forms” of love spells:  Love Divinations, General Purpose Loving Spells,  Potions/Aphrodisiacs/Philtres, Targeted Love Spells, Stay-Together  Spells, and Break-up Spells. We’ll talk about the romantic, the  disturbing, and the downright weird ways in which human beings pursue  love with sorcery.

About the Presenter:

Cory Thomas Hutcheson (Central Pennsylvania) is the cohost of the popular podcast New World Witchery.  He has a doctorate in American Studies with specializations in  folklore, religion, and ethnicity from Penn State. He is a contributor  to the Oxford Handbook of American Folklore and Folklife Studies and American Myths, Legends, & Tall Tales, and he has written for popular occult publications, including Witches & Pagans.
