Diviners On Divining is a monthly online class series hosted  by The Cauldron Black and presented and chaired by Dr Alexander Cummins  exploring the mysteries, minutiae, and mastery of divination with a  range of visiting guest diviners.
 
The Diviners On Divining series consists of twelve monthly  events across 2023 featuring a host of very special guest speakers  discussing various fundamental aspects of divination: from focused  exploration of particular systems and styles of oracular reading to  widely-applicable techniques, tips, and tricks of interpretation,  diagnosis, remediation, and enchantment for one’s personal and  professional divinatory practices.
 
We are proud to host a fantastic range of guest speakers with an  illuminating range of expertises for this series which welcomes conjure  doctors, folk healers, mediums, astrolators, cartomancers, rune readers,  witches, geomancers, candle-workers, and many other sorts of diviners  and workers. We are excited to invite you to this series of talks  celebrating the unfolding mysteries and practical wisdoms alike of  divination in its many many forms, functions, and fashions.
 
Carromancy or ceromancy is from the Greek κηρός, 'wax', and μαντεία, 'divination' is a form a divination where hot wax is poured over water and the visages of wax are divined on or by the watching of the movement and behavior of a candle flame and wax in a candle itself.
 
For the second in our year-long series – and in honour of the Feast of Candlemas occurring at the start of February – we are delighted to welcome candle-maker, artist, and sorceress Sarah Jezebel Wood to discuss some of the mysteries, the magics, and (of course) the divinations of wax and flame.
 
Whether it be the foretelling of coming misfortune or the evidence of spirit communication and prayer acceptance the flow of wax and flicking of flame has communicated to us since the days of yore. We’ll talk about some of the folklore surrounding the divining of candles, the common interpretations through divination and how this intersects with the making of candles.
 
There will also be ample opportunity for attendees to put forward your own burning questions about divining with candles for consideration and discussion. We are especially looking forward to Sarah sharing insights from her own professional practice as a chandler, photographer, and maker of enchanted and enchanting lights.
 
About the Presenter:
Sarah Jezebel Wood is an artist, chandler, and sorceress whose work explores the ephemeral nature of the liminalities of life and death through the interactions of time, place, objects, and moments. Either through the lens of a camera or a pot of wax she devotes herself to creating images of contemplation and sources of light. She is the owner of Lovi Artes, an intentionally crafted candle company that seeks to cultivate your inner fire through the art of wax, scent, ritual, and flame.
