The Mighty Dead Class Series - King Solomon with Matthew Venus & Dr Alexander Cummins
Time & Location
About the Event
When it comes to dead magicians, there are few who have left a bigger legacy of mythic influence upon ritual magic than King Solomon. As the builder of the Temple he is a potent figure in Jewish folklore and culture. As a devout and pious ruler in the direct line of David, his name becomes the very byword for wisdom. Lending his name and patronage to a variety of grimoires, from the ancient Testament of Solomon to the various Claviculae Salomonis of the late-medieval and early modern manuscripts of sorcery. Solomon is a master of exorcism; and of the pentacles, seals, and sigils employed for conjuring and commanding spirits. This class will not only consider features of the grimoires that bear his name, but examine the operative roles of Solomon in Solomonic magic and folk magical traditions. This lecture is co-presented by Matthew Venus of Spiritus Arcanum and Dr Alexander Cummins, practitioners each exploring relationships with the tutelary spirit of Solomon from their backgrounds in traditional witchcraft, necromancy, and cunning-craft. It is by these guiding lights this class will consider how developing a relationship with this prestigious magician spirit might be approached and how it can benefit your own magical practice. To this end, this class will explore the patronages of Solomon from several vantages including:
• Solomon, Son of David: the wise king and architect of the Temple in Jewish folklore, exorcism, and sorcery alike
• Solomon the Testifier: assessing the demonology and folk magic of the Testament of Solomon, one of the earliest predecessors of the traditional medieval grimoire.
• Solomon the Keyholder: touring the early modern Key of Solomon handbooks of angel summoning and commanding demons, considering the 'brasen pans' and 'glass vials' of spirit conjuration
• Solomon the Lover: sensual poet of the Canticles that make up the Songs of Solomon, patron of lovers and their honey-sweet love-songs.
