The Mighty Dead Class Series - Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa with Dr Alexander Cummins January 14th 2021, 7pm
Time & Location
Jan 14, 2021, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
About the Event
Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa was a German occult philosopher alive in the sixteenth century. He is best remembered as the author of the monumental Three Books of Occult Philosophy, and his name is seldom far from the lips or footnotes of any student or practitioner of early modern European magic.
This class seeks to understand Agrippa not only as a noted historical - indeed, historic - occult philosopher or even magician, but as a lineage ancestor of early modern Western magical traditions. In doing so, we will not only appraise this figure's contributions to occult practices in terms of historic influence, but also the necromantic possibilities for modern practitioners to work with Agrippa's shade for guidance and empowerment.
Our study and celebration of this ancestor of magicians will weave four strands of his legacy.
- Agrippa the Man will consider his life, biography and personality as a historical figure.
- Agrippa the Author will weigh his bibliographic contributions and historiographical treatment by scholars and practitioners.
- Agrippa the Nigromancer will delve into the sinister reputation this magician developed posthumously, re-telling some of the tales and rumours of his secret "black magic" and its terrible consequences.
- Finally, Agrippa the Ghost will survey the appearance of Agrippa's shade as a tutelary spirit in the sixteenth-century operations of Gilbert and Davis and their Excellent Booke of the Arte of Magicke detailed in their magical journal.
With this multifaceted approach to the influence and spirit of dear old "Onkel Heinrich", we will explore how the author of the Three Books of Occult Philosophy - widely acknowledged as one of the most important and respected encyclopaedias of European occult philosophy and magical lore - could also end up dubbed by the demonologist Jean Bodin, ‘the great doctor of the Diabolical Art’. Moreover, we will consider how the spectre of Agrippa can be courted in necromancies of tuition and transmission to work both theurgic and thaumaturgical sorcery.
