Diviners On Divining is a monthly online class series hosted by The Cauldron Black and presented and chaired by Dr Alexander Cummins exploring the mysteries, minutiae, and mastery of divination with a range of visiting guest diviners.

The Diviners On Divining series consists of twelve monthly events across 2023 featuring a host of very special guest speakers discussing various fundamental aspects of divination: from focused exploration of particular systems and styles of oracular reading to widely-applicable techniques, tips, and tricks of interpretation, diagnosis, remediation, and enchantment for one’s personal and professional divinatory practices.

We are proud to host a fantastic range of guest speakers with an illuminating range of expertises for this series which welcomes conjure doctors, folk healers, mediums, astrolators, cartomancers, rune readers, witches, geomancers, candle-workers, and many other sorts of diviners and workers. We are excited to invite you to this series of talks celebrating the unfolding mysteries and practical wisdoms alike of divination in its many many forms, functions, and fashions.

Playing cards aka “the soldier’s Bible” aka“the Devil’s picture book”; the fifty-four little talismans that make up a deck of cards (including the Jokers!) are found across the world from casinos and bars to kitchen tables and wherever folks need to pass the long hours away.  A deck of cards, properly worked with, will hold and reveal many secrets and potencies for those with the care and skill to speak with them…

Inaugurating our Diviners on Divining series, we are delighted to welcome the Old Testament conjure doctor and cartomancer – not to mention our favourite scoundrel! – Professor Charles Porterfield to share his time, wisdom, and camaraderie with us on the subject of divining with playing cards.

This discussion will include helpful notes for veteran card readers and newcomers alike on topics including: historical contexts for card reading and card magic in Southern Conjure, how to read cards in combinationto nuance our readings, working with spreads and “significator” cards, as well as wider consideration of the magical links produced by the act of divination itself.

There will also be ample opportunity for attendees to put forward your own burning questions about divining with playing cards for consideration and discussion. We are very much looking forward to the Professor sharing insights in his characteristically passionate, and heartfelt manner.

About the Presenter:

Professor Charles Porterfield is an old-fashioned, no-nonsense, Old  Testament reader and rootworker. He is the co-author of Hoodoo Bible  Magic: Sacred Secrets of Scriptural Sorcery, and author of A Deck of  Spells: Hoodoo Playing Card Magic in Rootwork and Conjure and The  Sporting Life: How to Help Yourself with Hoodoo from the Streets to the  Sheets. He writes, teaches, and lectures on hoodoo and conjure to help  preserve and pass on the roots of the work as well as consults,  prescribes, and divines work for those in need. He currently lives in  Denton, Texas with his wife and two cats.
